The UK left the EU at 11pm on 31 December 2020 and there is a transition period which is currently due to end on the 31st December 2020. However, within the various agreements between the EU and UK, there is the possibility of mutually agreeing an extension to the Transition period of up to 2 years.
The original timeframes had been decided, before the global disruption caused by Coronavirus, which has quite rightly dominated recent news. Since “Lockdown” was announced on 23 March there has been very little consultation between Government and Trade regarding progress on the negotiations. BIFA is focussing solely on the customs and other regulatory matters which will impact cross border trade.
